Retraction Cord

Dental retraction cords are essential tools used in dentistry for creating space between the tooth and the gingival tissue (gums) during various dental procedures. Dental retraction cords are commonly employed in restorative and prosthetic dentistry, particularly during crown and bridge preparations or when taking impressions for dental prosthetics.

Types:
Plain Retraction Cords: These cords are made of cotton or other materials and are used without any added chemical agents. They are typically available in different sizes.
Impregnated Retraction Cords: These cords are coated or impregnated with hemostatic agents such as epinephrine or aluminum chloride. The hemostatic agents help control bleeding and improve visibility.

Sizes:
Dental retraction cords come in various sizes (thickness) to accommodate different clinical situations. Thicker cords are often used for larger gingival sulci, while thinner cords are suitable for smaller spaces. The most popular sizes are 000, 00, 0 and 1. Some brands make sizes 2 and 3 but they are not nearly as possible.

Techniques:
1.    Single-Cord Technique: One retraction cord is placed in the gingival sulcus to achieve the desired retraction.

2.    Double-Cord Technique: Two cords of different sizes are used. The thicker cord is placed first to initiate initial retraction, followed by the placement of a thinner cord for further displacement.
