What is a Cavitron and how is it used?

Wondering about Cavitrons and Ultrasonic Scaling? First, let's clear something up. A Cavitron IS an Ultrasonic Scaling Unit, they are one and the same, which simply means they use water and vibrations to remove build-up in between and around your teeth at the gumline. Cavitron is just a name brand, manufactured by Dentsply Sirona, and just like Kleenex or Band-Aid Brand products, this means these are also some of the most expensive units and inserts on the market.

Let's Dig In!

Ultrasonic scaling units first need to be plugged into a power outlet and a water source. Power creates the energy for ultrasonic vibrations while a steady water stream aids the removal of debris simultaneously with the cleaning. Typically, the professional in the dental office using this equipment is the dental hygienist. This isn't to say dentists never use them, but it’s rare. Hygienists seem to be moving away from hand scaling with stainless steel instruments and working more with ultrasonic scalers. They produce more cleaning power with less effort allowing for faster, more efficient cleanings while still being gentle on tooth structure. With several different tip styles available, hygienists have multiple options for each patient, allowing them to better cater to patient comfort and improve acceptance.

Untrasonic Scaling Inserts (Tips)

The three most popular ultrasonic inserts are:

#10- Universal with about an 80-degree bend. This is the most popular and has been nicknamed UNIVERSAL.

#100- This has the same bend as the #10 but is thinner. This tip is great to clean subgingivally, or below the gumline. The difference to remember with this style is that the power and water should be set to a lower level, and therefore might not blast away plaque as quickly as #10.

#1000- This is the triple bend. The #1000 is a little more unique and the least popular of these three due to its irregular shape. The unique triple bend shank design allows increased access around line angles and interproximally. It can be used on the higher power settings.

Some other not as popular styles include the beaver tail, and right and left facing specific inserts for different quadrants.

When it comes to ultrasonic insert purchases, Hu-Friedy brand is by far and away our best-selling. Even though they are more expensive than the competition, their superior quality makes them stand out by improving the longevity of their life and maximizing hand comfort. Not only do they last longer, but they also level up comfort with options for a swivel handle which is more ergonomic for the hygienist’s wrist. And, like mostly all brands, Hu-Friedy also makes resin handles, thinner handles and wider, more comfortable handles. Another popular brand is the Coltene BioSonic Insert. Nearly always on promotion at Buy 3 and Get 1 Free, this is just one of the perks as you will also save about an average of $70 per insert versus the Hu-Friedy inserts. We also have available several other brands of ultrasonic scaling inserts that are perfect when your budget is tight! Browse our selection of Quala, Premier, and Dentamerica scalers to save some money and you won't be disappointed!

Unfortunately, the inserts do not last forever, and need to be replaced once the scaling tips wears away past manufacturers suggestions. I would say on average a hygienist that sees eight patients a day (average of one patient per hour, 9-5 with an hour lunch) and has anywhere from 6-10 tips. All brands are autoclavable, so they can be sterilized throughout the day and used again and again. On average I feel that hygienists purchase new insert annually. Always check your o-rings before throwing away a leaking scaler! Sometimes your scalers could be leaking and all you need is a new o-ring.

Ultrasonic Scaling Units

Ultrasonic scaling units are designated as either 25k, 30k, or both. Both means that there is a switch on the machine so you can set it depending on which insert tip you are going to use. The 25k inserts and 30k inserts have the same exact tips whether it be #10, #100, or #1000.  The only difference is the length of the bottom that gets inserted into the ultrasonic handpiece.  In dentistry today, the 30k style is exceedingly popular compared to 25k. I would say at least 95% of units sold today are either 30k or have the switch to be able to use 25k inserts as well.

Here at Healthcare Supply, we always recommend Coltene's US100R Scaling Unit. We feel like it’s the best bang for your buck! Is it the least expensive? No. But, it is a reputable workhorse and its cost is great. Normally Coltene even offers a promotion so you'll receive free ultrasonic inserts with purchase! The BioSonic does have the option to be switched between 25 and 30k inserts! If you are looking for a less expensive option, that works perfectly fine, and is our top seller check out this Dentamerica Scalex 830. It’s about half the price of the competition we sell and also includes an ultrasonic insert. This option is for 30k ultrasonic inserts only.
